The sixth annual Women Showing the Way Forum was held at the Bendigo Town Hall on Wednesday August 31st. A group of 20 young women from our college attended; representing Eaglehawk Secondary with pride.

The forum was run by the City of Greater Bendigo and featured three unique guest speakers: Anne Carey, Tasneem Chopra and Kelsey Griffin.

Students from Girton Grammar, Bendigo South East, Crusoe and Bendigo Senior listened along with our students as the speakers inspired the girls to have the courage to be kind, stand up for themselves and find the right balance in life.

Anne Carey was the first speaker of the morning. Anne is a nurse, a midwife and has spent her life helping others. She has provided health care in remote communities across Papua New Guinea, Northern Territory and Western Australia. As an Australian Red Cross aid worker, she has worked in Sudan, Kenya and most recently Sierra Leone on the frontline against the deadly Ebola virus. Anne shared her story of bravery with the group and encouraged everyone in the room to show kindness to others, no matter what.

Tasneem Chopra was born in Africa with an Indian heritage and an Australian upbringing. She was raised right here in Bendigo and is a curator, consultant, author and prominent activist and has addressed many social justice issues on a number of platforms. Tasneem was very entertaining and encouraged the girls to be confident in themselves and that our differences are what makes us special.

American born Kelsey Griffin - professional basketball player for Bendigo Spirit – shared with the women the importance of finding and keeping a balance in life. The Eaglehawk girls particularly loved listening to Kelsey, as some of them have posters of Kelsey on their wall and consider her to be one of their heroes.

The forum was a fantastic opportunity to meet inspiring role models and also network with other schools. Our students can’t wait for next year’s event! Check out photos taken by the Bendigo Advertiser here.
