COVID-19 Update - 20 March 2020

20 March 2020

Dear Parents/Carers

Thank you for your support to maintain normal day-to-day teaching and learning to continue for your child during this difficult time.

As Principal, my first priority is the health, safety and wellbeing of students and staff and will continue to follow DET advice and measures to maintain this as well as provide a calm and supportive learning and working environment.

At present, the best place for students to learn is at school. The exception is where students are being kept out of school due to self-isolation requirements or based on medical advice.

Please see below a summary of the measures implemented at the College for ensuring good hygiene practice, social distancing and school cleaning.

Social Distancing

  • We are implementing 1.5 metre distance between students & students and students & teachers

  • Circle time during Teacher Advisory has been suspended

  • We are suspending any cooperative or collaborative learning between students in class

  • Teachers are arranging desks with space between them to maintain social distancing

  • Students are being supported to maintain distance when sitting at classroom tables

  • Students are not lining up outside class spaces

  • We are supporting students to line up at the canteen mindful of distancing

  • Staff are using friendly ‘hands off’ language with kids and a visual of ‘out stretched arms’ to illustrate distance between students

Good Hygiene & School Cleaning

  • We have hand sanitizer available in Learning Communities as well as dispensers in all specialist areas and promoting its usage

  • We have good hygiene posters displayed around the school

  • We are constantly talking with students to promote good hygiene in TA and in general

  • DET have provided additional funding to support additional school cleaning needs

Other measures

  • We have cancelled all excursions or outdoor gatherings of 500 / indoor gatherings of 100

  • We have cancelled our New Caledonia International tour

  • All inter-school sport has been suspended

  • We have cancelled our school Athletics Day

  • We have suspended whole school and Community Assemblies

  • All programs between schools have been suspended for ESC such as the Athlete Development Program

School Council will meet on Monday night as normal for our AGM and presentation of the School Annual Report, with respect to measures, and will also discuss the COVID-19 response and the impact on school programs going forward such as our domestic camps program in term three.

I will provide further advice to parents/carers in regards to parent-teacher interviews, School Production and other events on the Term 2 school planner in due course.

Yours sincerely,

Dani Derksen
