The Head Start program is a new State Government and Department of Education initiative seeking to increase the number of students taking up school-based apprenticeships and traineeships across the state
The focus is on increasing the amount of time that students from Year’s 10–12 will spend on-the job undertaking their training providing better long term outcomes for students and employers.
ESC is one of the first schools in Victoria to participate in this new model. The program aims to increase the
number of students taking up school-based apprenticeships and traineeships, in addition to completing their VCE or VCAL Secondary School Certificate.
Ross Egleton is our Head Start Coordinator working with Eaglehawk Secondary College, Maryborough Education Centre, Bendigo South East and Bendigo Senior Secondary College. Ross is available to work with students, parents, school staff, employers and training organisations to get the best outcome for all participants.
The aim is for students to continue full time into their industry careers with strong literacy, numeracy and problem-solving skills after completing their schooling. These are the essential skills our young people will need within a modern, rapidly changing employment environment in response to employer and industry demands.

This dual qualification combination of an apprenticeship or traineeship and the completion of their secondary schooling provides the sustainability for long term future employment opportunities.
